Peer Advising Program

Overview:

At the Athletic Study Center, 5-6 Peer Advisors provide intercollegiate student athletes (primarily freshman and sophomores) with academic and campus life guidance during the Freshman Student Athlete Orientation, the Summer Bridge Program, and throughout the academic year.

Hiring:

The hiring process begins in March. Applications must be submitted to Chris Lane no later than March 13th, 2009.

Responsibilities:

Peer Counseling: 

Provide information to student athletes regarding Tele-BEARS enrollment procedures, university and college requirements, and NCAA rules and regulations.  Staff the Tele-BEARS hotline.  Counsel students regarding academic, social, and athletic issues.  Refer students to ASC staff when appropriate.

Program Planning and Outreach:

Assist Athletic Study Center staff with planning and implementation of seminars, workshops, the Freshman Student Athlete Orientation, and the Summer Bridge Program. Assist in developing programs for student athletes.  Conduct outreach to student athletes via phone, mail, personal contact, workshops, etc.  Represent unit at various campus events.

Clerical and Reception:

Perform administrative and clerical duties for professional staff.  Maintain set hours for reception duties.  Staff computer lab as needed.

Other Duties

Attend all training and weekly peer staff meetings.  Attend ASC staff meetings when requested.  Submit weekly time sheets and job progress updates.  Submit an evaluation survey.

Qualifications

Applicants need to have completed at least one year at Cal, be in good academic standing, be available to work from May 18th - August 14th, and be (or have been) a student athlete at Cal.  Must be responsible, articulate, self-motivated, and have demonstrated leadership abilities.  Summer Bridge participants preferred.

Pay

Peer advisors are paid $11.15 per hour.  During the summer, they are expected to work approximately 8-10 hours a week.  During the school year, hours will vary depending on student athletes' schedules.

Training

Peer advisors receive training in College of Letters & Science requirements, NCAA rules and regulations, major department requirements, and basic paraprofessional counseling skills.  However, a large part of the information presented is based on their first hand experience as student athletes at Cal.
